Floating offshore wind

Why floating offshore wind?

Floating offshore wind represents the most sustainable option to harness stronger, deeper-water winds, making it ideal for Italy’s vast coastline. With minimal environmental impact and higher energy output, it’s a key solution as Italy aims to generate 55% of its electricity from renewables by 2030.

  • Offshore wind is already a key contributor to global renewable energy, offering a cost-effective and efficient solution. Italy, with its goal of generating 55% of its electricity from renewables by 2030, is one of Europe’s most promising markets for floating offshore wind. Thanks to its extensive coastline and strong wind resources in the deeper waters of the Mediterranean Sea, Italy holds significant potential for this technology.

Unlike traditional fixed offshore wind, floating offshore wind farms can operate in much deeper waters, tapping into stronger, more consistent winds using larger turbines. This results in higher energy production per turbine, improving overall efficiency and offering a more reliable energy source.

In Italian waters, where depth and visibility restrictions apply, floating wind is a more practical and appropriate solution for expanding the country’s renewable energy capacity.

Additionally, floating platforms require no land clearing and have minimal landscape impact, especially when located beyond 23 kilometres from the coastline. As a cleaner and more sustainable alternative to fossil fuels, floating offshore wind is set to become a competitive energy source, contributing to Italy’s renewable energy ambitions.

Flexible site selection

Floating platforms offer greater site selection flexibility than bottom-fixed platforms, as their anchoring systems are less dependent on seabed conditions. This allows floating wind power to be placed where energy demand is highest and grid connections can be made.

Environmentally responsible

Floating wind farms, placed far out at sea, minimise impact on coastal communities and activities. They can also enhance marine ecosystems by providing safe havens for certain species.

Access to strong offshore winds

The strongest and most consistent winds are found in deeper ocean areas, where only floating platforms can operate. Floating wind farms allow us to harness this greater energy potential, significantly boosting electricity production.

Protection of Landscape and Marine Environment

Floating offshore wind farms offer several environmental benefits. They can protect marine ecosystems by acting as artificial reefs, which may promote biodiversity with minimal disruption. And since the floating platforms don’t require seabed drilling, they help preserve natural habitats while contributing to Italy’s renewable energy future. As members of AERO, we are committed to fostering both green energy and local growth.

  • Studies show that floating foundations can positively impact marine ecosystems by acting as artificial reefs, creating safe havens for various fish species. These protected areas also prevent unpermitted trawling, fostering nursery zones that support more sustainable fishing practices.

As for seabirds, comprehensive surveys will be conducted at the sites, and stringent mitigation measures will be implemented to create minimal impact on the species present in those areas.

A key advantage of floating technology is its minimal environmental disruption. The structures can be fully removed during decommissioning, allowing the marine environment to return to its natural state (UNECE, 2021,Bonou et al., 2016). Additionally, floating wind farms eliminate the need for seabed drilling, preserving the surrounding underwater ecosystem.

Floating offshore wind farms harness strong, consistent winds found only at sea, representing a new frontier in renewable energy. Their distance from shore also removes any visual impact, making them a more efficient alternative to land-based wind or solar installations.

As active members of the Association of Offshore Renewable Energies (AERO), we are committed to promoting offshore renewables in Italy. This not only boosts job creation and strengthens public trust in green energy, but also supports local economic growth while protecting the environment. Through ongoing community engagement, we aim to build trust and ensure energy independence for future generations.
